Recent Salmonella, Listeria, and E.Coli contamination pose a grave threat for both animals and humans.
The J.M. Smucker Company’s massive February recall of products such as Skippy, Ol’ Roy, and Kibbles ‘N Bits seems to just be the beginning of a worrying trend for pet owners. New recalls announced in March, as listed on the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website, include those from Milo’s Kitchen (J.M. Smucker Company), Blue Ridge Beef, and Natural Selections as well as ZooLogics (Darwin’s Natural Pet Products).
Milo’s Kitchen products are being taken off store shelves over fears of elevated levels of beef thyroid hormone, which can cause weight loss and agitation in pets. FDA testing found these hormones in products eaten by dogs that showed symptoms of hyperthyroidism, a disease that is rare in dogs. The products recalled include Steak Grillers with Angus Steak, and Grilled Burger Bites with Sweet Potato and Bacon. For more information, click here.
Blue Ridge Beef (BRB) is recalling its BRB Complete raw pet food over Salmonella and Listeria contamination, which can be fatal to pets. According to the company, the product to watch out for is BRB Complete, Lot# GA0131, manufactured on 01/31, 2018. For more information, click here.
Darwin’s Natural Pet Products is recalling Natural Selections and ZooLogics brand batches due to contamination of Salmonella and E. coli. The products included in the recall are Natural Selections’ Chicken with Organic Vegetables Meals for Dogs, Lot #43887, manufacture date 1/30/2018, as well as Duck with Organic Vegetables Meals for Dogs, Lot #44147, manufacture date 2/5/2018. ZooLogics is yanking off its Chicken Meals with Organic Vegetables for Dogs, Lot #44037, manufacture date 2/7/2018, and Turkey with Organic Vegetables Meals for Dogs, Lot #44127, manufacture date 2/4/2018. The second and third recalls are of particular public health importance because Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes can make both people and animals sick, and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O128 can cause serious illness in humans.
In the short term, it seems best to avoid all products from these companies
